The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve protects 1.3 million acres of coastal wetlands, tropical forest, and Caribbean reef — the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
Its name derives from Yucatec Maya, meaning "origin of the sky," a reference to the endless horizon where lagoon meets sea. The reserve shelters over 300 bird species, four species of sea turtle, jaguars, pumas, and the West Indian manatee. Ancient Maya communities engineered a network of canals through the mangrove swamps, carved by hand to facilitate trade and transport between inland settlements and the coast. Many of these channels remain navigable today, their stone-lined banks still visible beneath the water.
Punta Allen, the reserve's only permanent settlement, sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula that divides the Ascension Bay lagoon system from the open Caribbean. Fewer than 400 residents live in this fishing village, most of them lobster fishermen who work the shallow flats. The village has no paved roads, no banks, and limited cellular service. The 35-mile dirt track from the reserve entrance at Arco Maya to Punta Allen requires two hours in dry conditions, longer after rain. Visitors who make the journey find the biosphere as it was fifty years ago: unmarked trails, rookery islands thick with frigatebirds and cormorants, and sections of reef where hawksbill turtles surface among elkhorn coral.
Boat expeditions and kayak routes thread through the lagoon system, passing cenotes that open directly into salt water and narrow channels where crocodiles rest on exposed roots. The reserve's southern boundary extends to Punta Herrero and Tampalam, settlements accessible only by boat or rough track. Boca Paila Lagoon, bisected by the coastal road, serves as the primary launch point for half-day wildlife tours.
